Top Tips for Overcoming Timidity from “The Once Timid Networker”

At a networking event just a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to record this video with a good friend of mine, Tara Schmakel (also known as “The Once Timid Networker”), who offers her top four tips for overcoming timidness–something the majority of networkers face at one point or another.

Tara has plenty of additional information and resources for both painfully timid networkers and networkers who simply face moments of timidity once in a while and if you’d like to find out more, please visit Tara’s website: www.TheOnceTimidNetworker.com.

If you’ve struggled with timidness and have any anecdotes of your experiences or helpful tips to share, please leave your thoughts in the comments section. Thanks in advance for sharing your stories and insights to help others who are trying to conquer their timidity.

  1. I was just seeing myself. I am very timid especially in large crowds or with people I do not know. It’s true when you find another timid person, you can step out of yourself, smile, shake their hand, introduce yourself – then start with a simple question; while keeping the circle half-open for someone walking by to step in. Great relationships/friendships develop with a simple hello.

  2. I remember Tara when she was “Timid” and she learned how to break out of her shell and network with people and help them understand the power of networking. Now, she’s a leader in the industry! Great to see you doing so well Tara.

  3. Sue, thank you so much for your comment. I agree with you about stepping out of yourself. It really makes a difference! In fact now looking back, some of the people who made the biggest impression on me as I was becoming Once Timid were doing that very thing. And great tip about keeping the circle half-open. Body language is key for successful networking. Thank you for reading!

  4. Jerry, thank you so much for your kind words and for being a pivotal person in my personal development. I appreciate you!

  5. Hey, really great video. It’s so important that people ‘enjoy’ the people they’re with. I was also – well, timid wasn’t the word. I was TERRIFIED of people. I wouldn’t talk to anyone, although I’m happy to say that was an awful long time ago. Keep the hips coming Tara. Insanely great job!
