Personal Health Update 2string(24) "Personal Health Update 2"

Regular readers of my blog will recall that in May 2022 I shared a personal update about my health. As I mentioned before, I want to be transparent and continue to share my journey with all of you. After choosing a holistic approach to a 2012 prostate cancer diagnosis and having ten years without surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, the time came for me to employ a Western medicine approach.

In June of this year, I had a non-surgical procedure called CyberKnife proton therapy, which has over a 90% success rate. At the end of the treatment, my doctor was optimistic and said they would see me in six months. I felt good with just a bit of fatigue as a side effect, which was to be expected. Within a few weeks after the procedure’s completion, I was back to my regular routine – both personal and professional.

In early November, I went to Singapore for the BNI 2022 Global Convention. It was wonderful to be part of our first in-person Convention in three years, meeting BNI members and directors from around the world.

A week after returning home from Singapore, I met with my doctor regarding the CyberKnife treatment. The results were very good. My PSA dropped dramatically – 81%, which is an indication that the treatment was successful. I am pleased with this good news and wanted to share it with you.

I feel great and plan to continue with my full schedule, including traveling to California later this month to be with my daughter and her husband as they await the arrival of my first grandchild. It will be a wonderful way to welcome the new year!

As always, I appreciate the continued support, encouragement, and positive energy from so many during this long journey. I look forward to seeing you soon at an in-person or a virtual event. Thank you!

shape up your business

Shape up Your Business With Networking Aerobicsstring(47) "Shape up Your Business With Networking Aerobics"

It’s that time of year again when we make our “New Year Resolutions” and the world seems to be exercising more! I’ve put together a series of exercises you can consider to be networking aerobics. Diligent practice of these exercises will pay off in a healthy networking ability and improved contacts that will lead to contracts. Here are some exercises to help you to shape up your business and maintain networking momentum.

Leg lifts

Rise from your chair and get to a networking event. It might be tempting to indulge in “Cave Man” behaviors and never leave the office. This is not the best way to expand your business, much less develop a healthy word-of-mouth base.

Arm extensions

Extend your right hand from the shoulder to reach for the hand of any new contacts you meet. Shaking hands is an important part of making a new contact. Not extending the hand of friendship can be perceived negatively. It sets you apart as being aloof and cold. Just be courteous and warm, and I’m sure however you shake hands you’ll make a good impression.

Jaw flex

Immediately after the arm extension, introduce yourself to the person you just met. Let the new contacts know who you are and what you do. Make sure to be specific and provide a benefit statement about your services. Don’t forget that a good networker has two ears and one mouth and should use both of them proportionately-so give the jaw a little break.

The splits

As you see groups of two or three people talking together, go join them and introduce yourself. However, notice if they are “open” twos and threes or “closed” twos and threes. The open twos and threes will have a gap between the individuals, almost inviting another person to join with them. The closed twos and threes will be completely self-absorbed and wouldn’t be the first place to start practicing the splits. Ask the person hosting the event, or perhaps the individual who invited you to attend, to come around with you and introduce you to clusters of people.

Drop and carry

Ask for your new contacts’ business cards. Drop them into your left pocket and carry them back to your office. I usually carry my own business cards in my right pocket and use the left pocket to carry the new contacts’ cards. This habit can spare you the embarrassment of reaching into your pocket for your card and coming up with someone else’s card. Prior to dropping the contacts’ cards in your pockets, write a note on the back of their cards that will help jog your memory about them.

Arm curls

After your networking event, follow up with a phone call to the people you met. You might wish to follow up via e-mail or by sending note cards-just do something to put you back in the new contacts’ minds.

Cool-down

After attending a networking event, you need to do a cool-down exercise as well. We recommend recording the event’s contacts in a journal. There are also computer programs which will allow you to record the results of the networking event. Referring back to the documentation from the exercises you did at the event will help you cultivate the contacts into a bumper crop of referral business.

As you attend various networking events to promote your businesses, keep these exercises in mind and remember: no pain, no gain! You’ve got to put yourself out there in order to develop a word-of-mouth-based business.

Feel Better Fast

Feel Better Fast and Make It Laststring(33) "Feel Better Fast and Make It Last"

Dr. Daniel Amen believes that brain health is central to all health and success. When your brain works right, he says, you work right; and when your brain is troubled you are much more likely to have trouble in your life. His work is dedicated to helping people have better brains and better lives. In this video, Dr. Amen reveals his “BRAIN-XL” framework to help others feel better fast and make it last:

B for “Brain”

Your brain likes to do what it’s always done, even when that isn’t in your best interest. Getting stuck in unhelpful behaviors, holding grudges, and engaging in unproductive worrying all cause immense suffering. Work to optimize the physical functioning of your brain and shift your thinking habits to more positive practices for better health.

R for “Rational Mind”

It’s important to develop the mental discipline necessary for feeling better fast, including eliminating the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts), quieting your mind, focusing on gratitude, and even welcoming failure. With the help of some basic techniques, it’s possible for you to master your rational mind.

A for “Attachments”

Our attachments bring us the greatest joys and the most painful sorrows. It is when our relationships break people have the most mental health problems. Improving relationships and dealing with painful memories can help you achieve better outcomes. Learning how to improve your relationships can help you save your job, your marriage, your friendships, and all your relationships.

I for “Inspiration”

How to keep your pleasure center healthy in today’s world. Knowing and acting on your “why” is critical to living each day with joy. Purposeful people are happier and healthier, and live longer. Protecting your brain’s pleasure centers can help you live with passion and purpose.

N for “Nourishment”

In a world full of fast food and processed ingredients, our brains are affected by what we put into our bodies. Are you experiencing brain fog? A helpful nutritious diet can help you feel better quickly. Eating healthy foods can immediately boost your focus, memory and mood.

X for “X-Factor”

In any given situation, the X factor is the variable that has the most significant impact on the outcome.  Taking a look at the brain can be the difference between success and failure.

L for “Love”

Love yourself. Do things out of love of life or others. Caring for your body and brain affects your health and the health of generations to come. Love is the motivation that prompts us to put in the consistent effort and make the changes required to get healthy.

If you want to learn more about how the BRAIN-XL principles can help you stop the pain quickly, we recommend reading Dr. Amen’s new book, “Feel Better Fast and Make It Last.”

Unhealthy Habits

Seven Unhealthy Habits at Workstring(30) "Seven Unhealthy Habits at Work"

Being healthy is not only good for the individual, it’s good for business.  Healthy people don’t miss work and are more productive when they are at work.  So, let me share seven important unhealthy habits at work based on material from my book, Healing Begins in the Kitchen.

  1. Sitting still for hours can compromise your immune system. Your body needs movement in order to stay healthy. Getting up and walking, or even using a stand-up desk, keeps your lymphatic system flowing and your oxygen levels higher, so take stretch breaks or march in place at your desk every half hour. Studies have shown that people who do this consistently retain more of what they are learning and have better recall.

  1. Don’t drink coffee or black tea all day long. One cup of coffee or black tea in the morning isn’t a bad thing, but you need to drink water throughout the day in order to maintain optimal health. Herbal teas are okay to have frequently, but too much coffee or black tea will raise your body’s acid level and can lead to calcium depletion of your bones as your body tries to regulate the blood pH.

  1. Avoid taking work home with you on a regular basis. Maybe you want to impress the boss, but you’ll be more productive at work and will avoid burnout if you take quality time off every day. The concept of “be here now” is so important to your health. Taking work home with you robs you of your personal time and adds to your immune-suppressing burden of stress.

  1. Skipping lunch can be hazardous to your health. Sometimes it is tempting to press into a project and miss out on lunch, but you need to fuel your body and brain with nutritious food to be your best at work. Running on empty leads to low blood sugar which can restrict your ability to think quickly and clearly, and also slows you down. If you don’t have time for a lunch break, at least have some almonds or a healthy meal-replacement bar handy so you can refuel.

  1. Watch your bad attitude. It’s common to hear employees bellyaching and complaining about various things, but keep your attitude positive and have a solutions focus. You’ll find you have a stronger immune system. Positive attitudes lead to healing hormones like serotonin and oxytocin being released which support healthy immune function. Negative attitudes lead to damaging hormones being released (such as adrenaline and cortisol) which suppress healthy immune function. Attitudes are contagious, so surround yourself at work with happy, positive coworkers. Besides, it doesn’t do any good to complain to others. Half the people you tell don’t care, and the other half are glad you’re worse off than they are!

  1. Stop letting deadlines stress you out. OK, this one’s a little woo-woo. Stick with me though. Change your approach to those deadlines by scheduling frequent micro-breaks for focused breathing. Take five deep breaths every 30 minutes to an hour to help keep your immune system strong in order to protect your health. Studies have shown that when your brain is oxygenated, you perform better as well.  I know, it sounds crazy – but it’s the truth.

  1. Resist starting your day with donuts. Give your body something better than a high-carb, sugary breakfast to start your day strong. Try having a quick skillet scramble with pastured eggs cooked with high-antioxidant vegetables. Then you will be happily and healthily full and able to say no to those sugary treats at the office. If you’re not able to cook a hot breakfast, blend up a vegan protein drink.

Here’s a quote you might find interesting: Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.

These are not words of some twenty-first-century alternative health-care guru, no.  They are the words of Hippocrates, the father of Western Medicine (b. circa 460 BC).

We should take that to heart.  Literally.  Being healthy is smart for you and smart for business.  I know.  I learned this the hard way.  If you’d like more information on how I learned this, check out my book, Healing Begins in the Kitchen.

Thanksgiving

Our Thanksgiving Messagestring(24) "Our Thanksgiving Message"

Here we are, celebrating another Thanksgiving day in America. Beth and I have a lot to be thankful for this year, not the least of which is our good health. Just to bring you up to speed, we both received the “all clear” this year after learning about a threat to each of our health. Me with prostate cancer that seemingly came out of remission. Beth with a breast cancer diagnosis.

As you might imagine, good health is one thing we are extremely thankful for today. We want to share what we have done to move from having cancer to having complete health with you. Because so many of you have expressed interest in having the same kinds of powerful results, we have created a joint-venture with Majors Enterprises to bring you a 90-Day Misner Plan Challenge at the start of the New Year.

Misner Plan

The Misner Plan – Healing Begins in the Kitchenstring(53) "The Misner Plan – Healing Begins in the Kitchen"

I get request after request to share my foods list and eating protocol—so many that Beth and I have created the Misner Plan in order to share this information with many more people than we are able to email on a daily basis. We all know and love far too many people who are obese and/or suffering from many health issues which are due primarily to how and what they are eating. Many people know they need to make changes, but they are not interested in doing so. Many people want to make changes, but they don’t know exactly what to do. There is a lot of conflicting advice out there and there may not be a lot of support for the changes they do want to make.

In this recording, I share my personal journey into health. At the end, you will learn how you can get the material, the coaching, and the support that will help you move into health with our 2018 Misner Plan Challange.

Are you as healthy as you want to be? Do you have any health challenges or are feeling stressed?

If so, it’s time to take care of yourself. No one else will do it for you. Hippocrates once said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

Workplace Stress

Stress in the Workplace: Managing Job and Workplace Stressstring(58) "Stress in the Workplace: Managing Job and Workplace Stress"

Let me start by talking about “good stress” vs. “bad stress.”  Certain kinds of workplace stress can actually be good for you.  Good stress can help give you focus and achieve your personal and professional goals.  A deadline is a good example of how it can help you focus your efforts and achieve the results you want.  Good stress tends to be short-term.  It isn’t pervasive.

Bad stress, on the other hand, tends to be long-term and inescapable.  It can feel overwhelming and never-ending  What I’ve learned over the last few years is that this type of stress can absolutely, positively, unequivocally, affect both your business and your health.

Consequently, it’s good to have a plan at your job to address workplace stress and then execute on that.  If you’re feeling stressed out at work, try these three techniques:

  1. Work in Your Flame. This one may take time. People are either working in their wax (they hate what they’re doing) or they’re working in their flame (they love what they’re doing).  Do your best to transition out of things that are your wax and move into your flame.  For the record, it took me years to get to that place.  Set realistic expectations and move towards that goal daily.

  1. Job Discernment. Change the things you can change at work and accept the things you can’t change.  A mantra I learned from Jack Canfield which I absolutely love is, I have a child (business), I’m not my child (or whatever applies to you – such as I have a boss, I’m not my boss).  Discern what you can change at work and work on it.  Those things that are out of your control (like the traffic or your boss), you need to let go.

  1. Help Others. According to the American Journal of Public Health, “helping others predicted reduced mortality… by buffering the association between stress and mortality.”  Who would have thought?  If you help someone to grow their business, you will feel less stressed!  Well, to be honest, I’ve seen this professionally for many, many years.  One of the principle core values of my company, BNI, is Givers Gain.  This is a perfect example of feeling better at work by helping others first.

Get Well and Stay There with the Misner Plan

The visible changes in my health, including my weight loss and improved fitness level, have led to requests to share my eating protocol and fitness regimen after my cancer diagnosis and subsequent state of remission without standard medical treatments (chemotherapy, surgery, and/or radiation). We received so many requests that we felt we needed to create the “Misner Plan” book in order to share this information with more people than Beth and I are able to e-mail on a daily basis.

We all know and love far too many people who are obese and/or suffering from many health issues that are due primarily to how and what they eat. Many people know they need to make changes, but they are not interested in doing so. Many people want to make changes, but they don’t know exactly what to do. We need support and a community in which to make lasting changes. Having the input of someone who has been there before and has regained health is very powerful.

Eat real food. Enjoy real health!

The book, “Healing Begins in the Kitchen”, by the authors: Ivan Misner PhDBeth MisnerEddie Esposito, and Miguel Espinoza MD offers both information and support for you as you seek to regain and maintain your health while increasing your outlook for a long and healthy life. We have learned many things on this journey, and we want to share what we have learned with you. We continue to learn new things and find ourselves amazed at just how much there is to learn and understand about medical nutrition.

In this book, you will find stories of our personal experiences, struggles, and successes. We also, share input we have received from other well-informed and renowned healthcare professionals. As you read through the content, we encourage you to underline and highlight the sections that illuminate your own path.

Your success means so much to us. We are thrilled that you have found the “Misner Plan”. Focusing on eating real, healthy, nutritious foods can save your life and make a good life a fantastic life. “Healing Begins in the Kitchen” is now available on Amazon at the http://amzn.to/2sVW3jm website! Chernobyl Cheesestring(16) "Chernobyl Cheese"

Chernobyl Cheese – defined as cheese that can survive a nuclear disaster.

I’ve been wanting to write about my “Chernobyl Cheese” experience for a while now. Since my wife and I are currently working on the final draft of our Misner Plan recipe book, I thought this might be a good time.

Back in 2013, we transitioned from our home in Southern California to a home in Austin, Texas. In late 2014, we moved all of our remaining furnishings out of the Southern California home. I checked the contents of the refrigerator to make sure it was empty. Much to my surprise, I discovered a small, opened (but resealed shut) bag of sliced cheese which had been sitting in the back of a drawer in the refrigerator for a year! An entire year!!! The “sell by” date was September 7, 2013!

I thought to myself, “don’t look at it – it’s going to be a petri dish in a bag.” I need to go out and get an HAZMAT suit before I handle this infectious item. But, I couldn’t help myself, and I peeked. I was expecting to spontaneously utter some line out of Apocalypse Now like… “The horror, the horror.” But, instead, to my surprise – the cheese looked great! Not a single fungal-like substance to be seen. Actually, it looked as fresh as the day we bought it.

How could that possibly be? Real cheese doesn’t hold-up in a refrigerator for a year – even if it is in a zip-sealed bag. The answer – processed food is not real food. It may have some food-like ingredients but it certainly doesn’t behave like real food does. Real food typically doesn’t last in a fridge for more than a year. One of the fundamental elements of the Misner Plan is: “Eat real food.”

For those of you following my journey into health, be on the lookout for our upcoming book: Healing Begins in the Kitchen, which should be released in a few months.

We seriously considered naming the book “Cure Yourself Before You Kill Yourself,” but the lawyers didn’t approve of that title!
